Welcome to Mental Space Monday! Where we journey inside the rabbit hole of collective consciousness and submit to the whims of curiosity.
Welcome back to the Zombie Diaries! In a nutshell, we are inspecting the common traits that people share when they have faced near death experiences, when they have seen the other side of life's curtain, so to speak. And who better to relate this to than ... zombies? (Come on, who doesn't love a good zombie metaphor?)
We have arrived at Part 4 which is that spirituality becomes central and important in their lives. As I read this I felt the first doubts in my status as a member of our Zombie tribe. My near-death didn't instill a renewed interest in donating my Sunday mornings to a formal church service, nor an enlightening epiphany regarding the ultimate purpose of the universe.
Hmm………Next step: Google; where I find:
“I believe in God, but not as one thing, not as an old man in the sky. I believe that what people call God is something in all of us. I believe that what Jesus and Mohammed and Buddha and all the rest said was right. It’s just that the translations have gone wrong.” ― John Lennon
OK, maybe I am a follower of this John in that each of us carries a spark within us that is beyond definition or explanation. Eckhart Tolle addresses this very thing in his mind-blowing work A New Earth. He calls our Near Death Experiences "a limit-situation ... experiencing that emerging new dimension of consciousness as a result of tragic loss." Hes says when that which you identify with to give you your sense of self is taken away, "suddenly and inexplicably, the anguish or intense fear [you] initially felt gives way to a sacred sense of Presence." He even relates this to St. Paul (no, the Saint one) when Paul referred to, "the peace of God which passeth all understanding." Tolle says this peace, this self at the center of you is what is left when the world sheds us of the our ego.
It seems to me that, as zombies, we all have something within us that continually strives to understand that humanity that we once took for granted. Once we pass through to the other side of the looking glass, we must consciously examine the spark of our humanity and I believe we find that within whatever form our renewed sense of spirituality takes on.
We may not have expressly covered my Online Etymology Dictionary obsession yet, but as so often happens, I am led beck to the etymology of the word at hand. The root meaning of words is so ingrained in our culture and mentality of using them that we are no longer conscious of the influence that they have on us, but it is there nonetheless forming the building blocks of how we express ourselves.
Spirit is from Latin meaning breath, soul, courage, vigor. From a 13th century French reference: an animating or vital essential principle; a volatile substance.
Ok, I am totally on board for this; my Zombie status remains in tact.
For my part, I am overwhelmed and utterly inspired by the human spirit. It is at once so much simpler and greater than each of our physical amalgamations of cells; it is so much more inspired, animated, vital and yes, volatile. I do believe that there is the breath of something supremely unique and wonderful in each of us and that it is this collection of elements that allows us to connect with those around us and make the most of this crazy place.
When I am truly inspired by the minuscule moments in life I am taken by how they add up to the bigger world, the people, the relationships and experiences. I feel my breath catch. There is a suspension of the typical, the physical, the corporeal. When something takes our breath away, I feel like it truly touches our soul and connects us again to Lennon’s something in everyone else. Who knew we Zombies were so spiritual?
Embrace the delusion; enjoy the results. Have a wonderful day my lovelies.
